Volunteers are expected to sign in at the Stage and collect a sound meter from the yellow and black Sound Core box located under the edge of the Open Stage (this will be shown during the Sound Core Meeting). If a Sound Camp exceeds the maximum sound limit, Volunteers should indicate to the DJ or Camp Lead that the sound needs to be turned down. Early Arrival: no PA amplified sound, personal bluetooth speakers permitted until sundown
'''Monday June 30th (Early Arrival)'''

No PA amplified sound please. Low level Bluetooth/Handheld speakers are ok until sundown.

'''Tuesday July 1st'''

Arrival Day: no PA amplified sound, personal bluetooth speakers permitted
No PA systems. Handheld Bluetooth speakers are OK all day/night - except in quiet camping and anywhere in the field area. Anything that has a carry handle is not a small handheld speaker.

Holiday/Weekend Days: PAs allowed 10AM - 10PM, reduced volume 10PM to 6AM
'''Wednesday July 2nd'''

Exodus Day: PAs until noon, personal bluetooth speakers permitted during load out
Starting at 10am PA’s can be on at reduced volume. Music can go until 11pm, then turn all PA’s off for the night. Again, small bluetooth speakers are okay.

The maximum decibel levels for PA amplified sound will be approximately 85-95dB, but vary throughout Firefly depending on the weather. These limits are carefully determined by Sound Core Leads to avoid disturbing the neighbors or attracting law enforcement.
'''Thursday July 3rd'''

Starting at 10am PA’s can be on at reduced volume. At 10pm, attenuate your subs and PA’s - We want to keep subs on and music flowing Thursday night, but please remember that for the neighborhood, Thursday is still a “work night” and the people who live around here have to be up for work in the morning even if you don’t. Maximum volume level after 10pm is in the ballpark of ~88 SPL-C on-axis measured at the rear of the dance floor.

'''Friday July 4th and Saturday July 5th'''

Starting at 10am PA’s can be on at reasonable volume. Music can go until 11pm, then lower levels to under 94 SPL-C, and dip your subwoofer levels. Subs can remain on at reasonable (please be courteous to the neighborhood) volume until 6am when the DJ’s usually finish. 6AM - 10AM in the morning is considered quiet time, again handheld/BT speakers are OK during that period. Maximum volume levels after 10pm are approximately 88-94 SPL-C on-axis measured at the rear of the dance floor, again the exact number is weather-dependent.

'''Sunday July 6th (Exodus)'''

PA amplified sound is allowed until 12pm. The event officially ends at noon, after which, low level/Bluetooth speakers are allowed for the remainder of your load-out.

Sound Core Volunteer Expectations

Attend Sound Core Meeting

A Sound Core meeting will be scheduled for Volunteers and Sound Camps at the start of the festival. You will be emailed the meeting's scheduled time and location before the festival begins. You can also check with Gnomes on arrival to confirm the meeting time and location. All Volunteers are asked to attend. All Sound Camps are asked to send a representative.

2025 Meeting: Wednesday at Noon at the Open Stage

During the meeting Volunteers will be shown where to sign in for their shifts, check the maximum sound levels for the night, and collect a sound meter. You will also learn where and how to measure sound levels. You will be shown where to log violations.

Sound Camps will receive meters to check their own levels. Sound Camps will be shown where to check the maximum sound level for each night. Sound Core Leads will be available to answer specific questions.

2025: Sound Core Lead Kevin Green will be camped in the Back 40 (Camp Live Free and Burn), and can be reached on Radio Channel 1. Sound Core Co-Lead Taylor Shutt will be camping in the Butterfly/Upper Field in open camping.

Monitor Sound

Volunteers are expected to sign in at the Stage and collect a sound meter from the yellow and black Sound Core box located under the edge of the Open Stage (this will be shown during the Sound Core Meeting). You will also find the maximum decibel level to be enforced that night in the box with the meters. Be sure to check the limit, so you can enforce it. You can then freely roam and enjoy the festival, testing levels at random as instructed.

If a Sound Camp exceeds the maximum sound limit, Volunteers should indicate to the DJ or Camp Lead that the sound needs to be turned down. If the DJ fails to lower the sound, please escalate the matter to a Ranger or a Sound Core Lead. Volunteers are not expected to be enforcers and should not confront uncooperative DJs.

If you need to warn the same DJ or Sound Camp three times in a single shift, immediately find a Ranger to relay the information to Sound Core Leads.

Upon finishing your shift, please return your meter and log all violations. If you work the early shift, please try to be punctual returning your meter so the graveyard shift can use it.

Shift Schedules

There are two shifts for Sound Volunteers each night that amplified sound is permitted. The first shift is from 10pm to 2am; the graveyard shift is from 2am to 6am. Volunteers will be reminded of shifts by email before the festival. A printed list of shifts will be present at the Stage. Gnomes can also assist in confirming shifts for all Cores during the festival.

Read the shifts carefully when signing up to be sure you have the shift you want.
