Emilywithay: /* Lost & Found Hero */

Thank you for volunteering with the Leave No Trace (LNT) crew! We appreciate your efforts to help us keep the land free of matter out of place (MOOP). If you have any questions or suggestions before or after the event, please email LNT@fireflyartscollective.org. We'll leave contact information at MOMM if you need to get in touch with a core lead during the event. See below for descriptions of our volunteer positions.

[[Leave No Trace (LNT) Core|Return to LNT main page]]

== '''Lost & Found Hero''' ==
As a Lost & Found hero, you will make the rounds to the major theme camps to collect items lost at the camp and bring them to the Lost & Found. Along the way, you should feel confident proclaiming good LNT practices, picking up any MOOP you encounter, and encouraging other Fireflies to do the same. Also spread the word about the location of the Lost & Found -- it is your mission to ensure all that Lost Things are Found! Shifts are 2-4 pm Wednesday through Saturday and 9-11 am on Sunday (Exodus).

To start your shift, come to MOMM (aka the Museum of Modern MOOP, aka the event Lost & Found), which is in Upper Field along Butterfly Boulevard.

Take the pumpkin tote bags for Lost & Found items and walk around to theme camps asking if they have any Lost & Found items for you to take to MOMM. Every theme camp has a camp LNT lead who should be leading their campmates in daily MOOP sweeps and identification of Lost & Found items, so they shouldn’t be surprised to see you. If they're unprepared, let them know someone will be around again tomorrow at the same time!

While one of your goals is to collect Lost & Found items, you’re also valuable in just reminding people about the Lost & Found and about LNT in general. If you would like to take one of our grabbers and a ziplock bag with you to do some intentional and visible MOOP* sweeping of trash while on your Lost & Found loop, that would be great! (And you can leave your trash ziplock at MOMM after your shift.)

When you return to MOMM, please fill out the brief form in the binder asking how many items you collected, just so we can track MOMM activity and make potential changes to volunteer shifts in future years.

If you have extra time while waiting for your buddy at the start of your shift or if you get back to MOMM early, feel free to do some museum curation or general tidying of the space.

<nowiki>*</nowiki>MOOP = matter out of place, which includes both lost items and trash items

== '''Compost Collector''' ==
As a Compost Collector, you’ll start your shift at Nexus / Upper Parking, and look for the red metal cart that you will use for your shift. (Since there’s only one cart, please be on time so you can find your compost collecting buddies before setting out!)

Your job is to take the cart up the hill and give people the AMAZING gift of offering to empty their compost bucket for them! You’ll collect buckets from camps, deposit compost in the pile, return empty buckets to camps, repeat as time allows, and return the cart to upper parking.

We recommend starting at the top of the hill so you don’t need to drag full buckets uphill.

At the end of your shift, please go to MOMM to sign in for your shift and fill out a brief form in the binder asking for an estimate of how many buckets you collected, just so we can track composting activity and make potential changes to volunteer shifts in future years.

== '''Lost & Found Barker & Breakdown''' ==
Break down the Lost & Found infrastructure to get handed off to DPW for storage, while also reminding passersby to check the Lost & Found for any missing items.

To start your shift, come to MOMM (aka the Museum of Modern MOOP, aka the event Lost & Found), which is in Upper Field along Butterfly Boulevard. There you'll find instructions, a volunteer shift sign-in book, and instructions for whom to contact with any questions.

This shift is 11 am-1 pm on Sunday (Exodus).

=== Barker Duties ===

* Be loud. Get people into MOMM to look around just in case; it's impressive how many people don't realize they lost an item until they see it displayed on a MOMM shelf.
* Because people will ask: No, they can't take things that aren't theirs even thought it's the end of exodus. We continue to return items after the event.

=== Lost & Found Items ===

* Unless the sky/ground is too wet to make this possible, please lay out or hang any wet items to dry.
* Remove items from bins and try to make everything visible from the path. With this shift, MOMM's goal changes from "Make lost items art!" to "Make it easy for people to find their lost stuff."
* If you have time, sorting items into categories and folding clothes, etc. is helpful but not necessary.

=== Small MOMM Infrastructure ===

* There will be a supplies bin in the back of MOMM where you can neatly store small items such as lights, whiteboards, etc.
* Remove batteries from anything battery operated before storing.
* Take down the lights, please please please making sure to neatly coil the fairy lights.
* Stack the whiteboards.
* Untie markers and erasers and put them into ziplock bags.
* Keep bins in a separate pile from the large infrastructure; an LNT core lead will handle these.

=== '''Large MOMM Infrastructure''' ===

* '''Shelves:''' All the shelving breaks down flat. Look in the supplies bin for rope to tie together similarly shaped pieces of wood for easy transportation.
* '''Easy up:''' Take down the easy up. Its bag should be in the supplies bin.
* '''Lockbox:''' Someone with a code will do a final check of Val, the valuables safe.
* All large infrastructure should be placed in one pile near (but not in) the UTV path to be picked up.

== '''Field Sweep Crew''' ==
On the final day of the event, volunteers will gather to do a line sweep of the Bug Burn Field. This shift involves picking up pieces of MOOP (matter out of place) from the field. You will be provided with a bag for MOOP that you find and it will be collected at the end of the shift.

Be sure to dress for the weather! Hats with brims and umbrellas are great ideas if it’s a sunny afternoon. We’ll have some sunscreen, bugspray, and water, but please bring your own if you have it.

Meet at the top of the bug field, near where the coffee table is during the event.

This shift is 2:30-4:30 pm on Sunday (Exodus). Be sure to coordinate with your own camp to ensure you can meet your obligations both to camp breakdown and to the field sweep.

== '''Field Sweep Leader / Parking Lot Sweep Leader''' ==
Wrangle a bunch of us into a straight-ish line and lead us across a field looking for shiny things in the grass. Weirdly meditative, also a lot like the game "Red Light Green Light," ideal for those skilled in herding cats. Prior field sweep experience is helpful but not required, and an LNT core lead will be there to help out as well. We sweep the fields in the afternoon of exodus day, and the parking lots the following day during land sweep/late crew.

Shift timing aligns with the regular field sweep crew and land sweep crew shifts.

== '''LNT Land Sweep Crew''' ==
This is LNT's late crew shift, and it is, first off, awesome. You will be heralded as a champion, included in the Lore of Future Fireflies...or at the very least loved by your campmates. Land sweep volunteers stay an extra day on the land to conduct a Firefly-wide MOOP sweep. We sing, we are merry, we work hard, and we go home tired but laughing. Generally LNT land sweep is finished by 2 or 3 pm. Note that this is a full-day LNT late crew shift that takes place the day after exodus (Monday).

=== '''Sunday Logistics''' ===

* '''OPTIONAL 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm:''' Field sweep at the bug field (this is a separate volunteer shift, but feel free to join if you’re available)
* '''7-8 pm:''' LNT potluck and brief meeting at Meat Camp. Please bring food to share if you have it! Participation is encouraged but not mandatory. (This is fun & delicious.)
* '''Tents:''' You can leave your tent wherever it is from Sunday night through Monday morning. However, it's a good idea to start packing up whatever you can tonight so you're not rushing in the morning.
* '''Cars:''' After Exodus is complete on Sunday, you can move your car to Nexus / Upper Parking (where it will need to be by 8 am Monday morning). If your car is cleared for hill access, you may instead park it closer to your campsite on Sunday evening. If you do this, park your car fully off the road, ideally in a loading zone, and leave as much space as possible for other vehicles to pull in if needed. All cars must be in Nexus / upper parking by 8 am Monday morning.

=== '''Monday Logistics''' ===

* '''*Before* 8 am:''' break down your tent, pack up your gear, and move cars to Nexus / upper parking. Everything must be off the hill before we start the MOOP sweep.
* '''8-8:45 am:''' potluck breakfast and LNT briefing at Meat Camp. Please bring food to share if you have it!
* '''9 am:''' We start the matter out of place (MOOP) sweep. Depending on weather, we’ll likely start with group field sweeps of the parking lots. Once parking lot sweeps are completed, we’ll assign different people different sections of the hill and disperse to sweep those.
* '''Around 1 pm:''' Pizza party!!
* '''After lunch:''' Finish sweeping the hill.
* '''Around 3 or 4 pm:''' We finish with the land sweep! At this point you will be free to leave or…
* '''OPTIONAL Evening:''' You can help out DPW’s breakdown crew, who always work later into the evening than we do. DPW sums up the breakdown tasks you could help them with as “picking things up and putting them down,” and these more specifically include: hopping in a polaris with DPW folks driving around picking up items to deliver to the barn; being at the barn receiving items and tetrising them into storage; helping sort stuff labeled trash and tossing it into the dumpster; taking down shade structures; putting away tables, chairs, trail lights, etc; and helping to remove tenax (the green mesh road protection stuff).
'''Be sure to dress for the weather.''' Hats with brims and umbrellas are great ideas if it’s sunny. We’ll have some sunscreen, bugspray, and water, but please bring your own if you have it.
== Be a good steward of the land. ==

=== DOs ===

* ✅ Put a tent over ferns without cutting them. (They will bounce back.)
* ✅ Rake around fires and burn barrels to prevent fires. (Put the leaf litter back afterwards.)
* ✅ Move sticks to make room for camp infrastructure or to designate paths or other spaces within your camp. (Scatter any sticks you've intentionally arranged afterwards.)
* ✅ Remember that, in general, if it’s dead, you can move it. If it’s alive, leave it.

=== DON'Ts ===

* '''🚫 Don't do anything involving leafblowers, weedwhackers, shovels, or mattocks.'''
* '''🚫 Don't cut, rip, or shred any ferns.''' This damages them and there are less and less of them each year, changing the appearance, habitat, and ecosystem of the forest.
* '''🚫 Don't cut or damage saplings.''' Anything standing vertical and alive is to remain vertical and untouched. You can move sticks, branches, and chopped wood to make room for your camp infrastructure. If you spot a tree or branch dangling menacingly over your camp, bring this to DPW's attention.
* '''🚫 Don't rake paths or camping spots bare,''' as that 1) disturbs habitats unnecessarily and 2) create slick mud pits when it rains; leaf litter helps to prevent paths and camping spots from becoming outright mud puddles.
* '''🚫 Don't level or terraform the ground,''' including to redirect rainwater or streams. If whatever you are planning on doing requires shovels or mattocks, do not do it. Especially take care not to redirect rainwater into main paths; drainways have been specifically shaped along the main vehicle accessible paths in order to allow rainwater to cross paths without damaging them or flow away from the paths altogether. Modifying these drainways or redirecting rainwater may compromise paths and impede road access in case of emergencies.
* '''🚫 Don’t bag or trash fire pit ash;''' instead scatter them broadly in the woods (after checking for MOOP) to return those minerals to the soil. Only wood should be burned in fire pits, not cigarette butts or other trash. (Note: Ashes from fires in which toxic flame colorants have been used should not be scattered, so please avoid those chemicals or have a plan for how to deal with the ashes.)
* '''🚫 Don't remove any plant or animal life''', dead or alive, from the forest.
* '''🚫 Do not open areas of the rock wall that are not already open!''' This may only be done with landowner permission and will be handled by DPW.
'''If you use permethrin, apply it off-site!'''

== Protect the stream. ==
* Enter the stream at areas where there is a bridge or other entrance as the sides of the stream bed are fragile ecosystems.
* Wash off your sunscreen, bug spray, and personal products at least 100 feet away before getting in the stream.
* Don't use soap in the stream, even the hippy stuff.
* Peeing in the woods is encouraged (helps prevent portapotty overload) but make sure to pee 100 feet away from the stream and to throw your TP in your trash.
* Don't wash dishes in the stream. Gray water should be filtered to remove chunks and disposed of 100ʹ away from the stream. If it’s chunky or oily, pack it out! Use a funnel and container with screw top. To reduce chunkiness of grey water, wipe dishes with a paper towel into the trash before washing. Use ONLY biodegradable soaps to wash dishes.

== Don't MOOP. ==

=== Definition ===
MOOP stands for Matter Out of Place, and avoiding leaving MOOP anywhere on the hill, in the forest, on the fields, along paths, etc. is an essential part of leaving no trace at Firefly. MOOP includes, but is not limited to:

* '''Personal items''' that have been misplaced or forgotten
* '''Trash''' of any size, including
** '''Feathers, sequins, or''' '''glitter''' (DO NOT pack anything with these on them)
** '''Cigarette butts''' (bring a container to dispose of these if you plan to smoke)
** '''Toilet paper''' (if you use TP in the woods, it needs to go into your personal trash bag)
** '''Food scraps''' (no, you can't toss your banana peel into a bush)
* '''Poop''' (Please don't poop in the woods. We don't want to have to pick it up. 💩🤢)

=== Guidelines ===
* '''🚫 DO NOT BRING''' anything with feathers 🪶, sequins 💎, glitter 🌟, or anything else likely to fall off your costume or body and become MOOP. This is a rule and not a suggestion; if you're walking around in a MOOPy outfit, attentive Fireflies will tell you to go back to your tent and change.
* '''🏷️ LABEL YOUR BELONGINGS''' with your name and where you're camping, especially cups, water bottles, hats, jackets, or other items you're likely to carry around with you.

* 🍬 '''CARRY A SMALL PLASTIC BAG''' for any trash you create or find while away from your campsite. It's expected that everyone be prepared to pick up any MOOP they encounter at Firefly.
* '''🗑️ BRING TRASH BAGS''' to use for your personal trash for the week. You will need to carry all your trash offsite with you at the end of the event.

=== Other Tips ===

* Brightly colored zip ties, paracord, etc. are easier to find when packing up than black, white, or clear ones.
* Attach small pieces of brightly colored flagging tape to fairy light strings, metal tent stakes, and anything else that might try to blend in nature.
* Reduce your total trash by removing unnecessary packaging from food and other items before you pack them.

== Bring Lost & Found items to MOMM. ==
Found objects are not “ground-scores.” Bring them to the Lost and Found, located just up the path from Upper Parking and the Upper Portos, as you would hope someone would do for your stuff.

Firefly's Lost & Found is also known as the Museum of Modern MOOP (MOMM), and you're encouraged to caption and display any items you find and return. Also remember to check here for items you may have lost before leaving the event! There will also be a lockbox for valuables like electronics, medication, and jewelry.

== Use portopotties responsibly. ==
* If it didn’t come from your body, it doesn’t go in the potty. The only exception is the provided 1-ply toilet paper.
* Baby wipes, pads/tampons, etc. must be carried out.
* Peeing in the woods is fine, but all other human waste MUST go in the potty or be otherwise removed. POOP and PUKE are MOOP!
* Put the seat down for best ventilation.
* Any deco or signage hung in the portos may use painters tape only.

[[Leave No Trace (LNT) Core|Return to LNT main page]]

=== 1. Ensure everyone in your camp understands Firefly’s Leave No Trace guidelines. ===
Communicate the [[LNT Guidelines]] to your camp members before the start of the event, and make sure individuals in your camp comply with those guidelines. (Please please please look around for potentially MOOPy costume items!)

=== 2. Have plans for trash, compost, and dishwashing. ===

* If group meals or any of your events will create trash, where will that go?
* What (if anything) counts as communal trash rather than personal trash?
* Who is responsible for taking any communal trash off-site after the event?
* How will you differentiate between trash, recycling, and compost?
* If you collect camp compost, who is responsible for bringing it to the central compost pile?
* If you have a camp dishwashing station, how will you ensure gray water is correctly disposed of?

=== 3. Lead daily MOOP sweeps. ===
Lead (or designate volunteers from your camp to lead) daily MOOP sweeps of any spaces in your camp where you host guests or hold events. MOOP gets trampled and hidden under ground cover over time, so daily sweeps are important! Please complete your daily MOOP sweep before 2 pm each day (as well as an additional sweep right after any large events during the day).

=== 4. Funnel lost & found items to MOMM ===
If you identify any Lost & Found items during your MOOP sweep, please bring them down to the central Lost & Found, which will again be MOMM (The Museum of Modern MOOP), located just up the path from upper parking. As a backup, we’ll send Lost & Found Heroes around to pick up items from 2-4 pm Wed-Sat and from 9-11 am Sun (but they won't make it to every camp every day).

In our experience, a lot of lost items aren't given to LNT until exodus or after the conclusion of the event. This makes it hard to get items back to their owners during the event, which is why we’re hoping to develop systems to funnel lost items to MOMM throughout the week.

To help with this, we recommend that you designate a “Camp Lost & Found” container to collect items that guests leave in your camp. You’ll also want to protect camp members’ belongings from getting swept up in the MOOP sweep; ideas for this include

*Designating specific spaces where people can safely leave their personal belongings, separate from general events areas
* Leaving at least an hour between the end of the MOOP sweep and the time when items will be taken to MOMM so camp members can check that none of their items got swept
* Providing labels and sharpies to encourage people to put their name on anything they might accidentally leave out

=== 5. Lead a final MOOP sweep of your camp during Exodus. ===
Your last responsibility as camp LNT lead is to ensure that your camp has left no trace on its designated area. To do this, lead a final line sweep across your entire area (everything you roped off during Placement). Plan this for after most tents and infrastructure have been broken down, but before everyone has left — line sweeps are much faster and more thorough when you have more people!

To conduct a line sweep, form a line where everyone is able to touch fingers with arms outstretched (closer if possible). Walk in a line, at the same pace. If someone is getting ahead or falling behind, regroup. Don’t forget to look up in trees, into ferns, and under ground cover. You can use a long stick or your foot to move around the leaf litter, poke into ferns and find objects that may have gotten buried. People often leave bungee cords, tent stakes, and other items that aren’t easy to spot.

If you will not be the last person at your camp, please make sure you delegate this task to a trusted campmate. The LNT core will reach out to both you and your camp leads if we find excessive MOOP left in your area.

'''Camps that leave excessive MOOP risk having future Placement Applications held for review.'''

[[Leave No Trace (LNT) Core|Return to LNT main page]]

== Rule #1: Defend against MOOP! ==

=== Definition ===

=== Guidelines ===

=== Other Tips ===

== Rule #2: Set up camp responsibly. ==

=== If it’s dead, you can move it. If it’s alive, leave it. ===

=== DOs ===

=== DON'Ts ===

== Rule #3: Bring Lost & Found items to MOMM.

== Rule #4: Don't contaminate the stream or forest. ==

=== You can pee in the woods, but ===

* Don't do it within 100 feet of the stream.
* Don't leave toilet paper behind; take it with you in your personal trash bag.

=== You can cool off in the stream, but ===

* NO SOAP in the stream, even the hippy stuff.
* Wash off your sunscreen, bug spray, and personal products at least 100 feet away from the stream first.

=== You can wash dishes at your camp, but ===

* Not in the stream
* Strain your grey water and dispose of it at least 100 feet from the stream.
* If it’s chunky or oily, pack it out! Use a funnel and container with screw top. To reduce chunkiness of grey water, wipe dishes with a paper towel into the trash before washing.
* Use ONLY biodegradable soaps

=== Please use the portopotties, but ===

* If it didn’t come from your body, it doesn’t go in the potty. The only exception is the provided 1-ply toilet paper.
* Baby wipes, pads/tampons, etc. must be carried out.
* Peeing in the woods is fine, but all other human waste MUST go in the potty or be otherwise removed. POOP and PUKE are MOOP!
* Put the seat down for best ventilation.
* Any deco or signage hung in the portos may use painters tape only.

=== If you use permethrin, apply it off-site! ===
If someone is getting ahead or falling behind, regroup. Don’t forget to look up in trees, into ferns, and under ground cover. People often forget bungee cords, tent stakes, and other items that aren’t easy to spot.

* What (if anything) counts as communal trash rather than personal trash?
* Who will be responsible for taking any communal trash off-site after the event?

=== 3. Lead daily MOOP sweeps. ===
Lead (or designate volunteers from your camp to lead) daily MOOP sweeps of any spaces in your camp where you host guests or hold events. MOOP gets trampled and hidden under ground cover over time, so daily sweeps are important!
Every year, a lot of items get dropped off at the central Lost & Found during exodus, or handed off to the LNT core from theme camps after the conclusion of the event. This makes it hard to get items back to their owners during the event, which is why we’re hoping to develop systems to funnel lost items to MOMM throughout the week.

To facilitate this, we recommend that you designate a “Camp Lost & Found” container to collect items that guests leave in your camp.

[[Leave No Trace (LNT) Core|Return to LNT main page]]

== Rule #1: Defend against MOOP! ==

=== Definition ===

=== Guidelines ===

=== Other Tips ===

== Rule #2: Set up camp responsibly. ==

=== If it’s dead, you can move it. If it’s alive, leave it. ===

=== DOs ===

=== DON'Ts ===

* 🚫 Don't do anything involving leafblowers, weedwhackers, shovels, or mattocks.
* 🚫 Don't cut, rip, or shred any ferns. This damages them and there are less and less of them each year, changing the appearance, habitat, and ecosystem of the forest.
* 🚫 Don't cut or damage saplings. Anything standing vertical and alive is to remain vertical and untouched. You can move sticks, branches, and chopped wood to make room for your camp infrastructure. If you spot a tree or branch dangling menacingly over your camp, bring this to DPW's attention.
* 🚫 Don't rake paths or camping spots bare, as that 1) disturbs habitats unnecessarily and 2) create slick mud pits when it rains; leaf litter helps to prevent paths and camping spots from becoming outright mud puddles.
* 🚫 Don't level or terraform the ground, including to redirect rainwater or streams.
* 🚫 Don't remove any plant or animal life, dead or alive, from the forest.

== Rule #3: Bring Lost & Found items to MOMM.

== Rule #4: Don't be gross. ==

* Not in the stream
* Strain your grey water and dispose of it at least 100 feet from the stream.
* If it’s chunky or oily, pack it out! Use a funnel and container with screw top. To reduce chunkiness of grey water, wipe dishes with a paper towel into the trash before washing.
* Use ONLY biodegradable soaps

== '''Lost & Found Hero''' ==
And if you see any labeled items feel free to try to return them to their owners!

To start your shift, come to MOMM (aka the Museum of Modern MOOP, aka the event Lost & Found), which is just up the path from the upper parking portos. If there isn't an LNT lead there at the time, you'll find instructions, a volunteer shift sign-in binder, and instructions for whom to contact with any questions. Your main tasks are described below.

Shifts are 2-4 pm Wednesday through Saturday and 9-11 am on Sunday (Exodus).

=== Tasks (in priority order) ===

* '''Collect Lost & Found items from theme camps:''' Starting at MOMM, grab an orange pumpkin bag and walk around to camps and collect Lost & Found items. These are most likely to be in bigger theme camps (so make sure to go there), but anywhere is fair game. Then return to MOMM by the end of your shift and deposit any items you collected during your walk. Ideally, any camps hosting events (especially the large sound camps) should have a process for identifying Lost & Found items and either bringing them to MOMM or having them ready for you to collect. If they're unprepared, let them know someone will be around again tomorrow at the same time!
* '''Collect trash-MOOP:''' Before setting off on your rounds, please also grab a ziplock baggie to collect any trash you find along the way. There will be a secret trash receptacle in an undisclosed location for any trash you collect during your rounds.
* '''Museum Maintenance:''' Straighten crooked labels, pick up fallen items, rearrange items artistically, make space for new arrivals, etc.
* '''Leave a Note:''' Use the provided space in the volunteer shift sign-in binder to let us know how item collection went and if you have any suggestions for how to improve the LNT volunteer experience.

== '''Lost & Found Barker & Breakdown''' ==
Break down the Lost & Found infrastructure to get handed off to DPW for storage, while also reminding passersby to check the Lost & Found for any missing items.

To start your shift, come to MOMM (aka the Museum of Modern MOOP, aka the event Lost & Found), which is just up the path from the upper parking portos. If there isn't an LNT lead there at the time, you'll find instructions, a volunteer shift sign-in book, and instructions for whom to contact with any questions.

This shift is 11 am-1 pm on Sunday (Exodus).

=== Barker Duties ===

* Be loud. Get people into MOMM to look around just in case; it's impressive how many people don't realize they lost an item until they see it displayed on a MOMM shelf.
* Because people will ask: No, they can't take things that aren't theirs even thought it's the end of exodus. We continue to return items after the event.

=== Lost & Found Items ===

=== Small MOMM Infrastructure ===

* There will be a supplies bin in the back of MOMM where you can neatly store small items such as lights, whiteboards, etc.
* Remove batteries from anything battery operated before storing.
* Take down the lights, please please please making sure to neatly coil the fairy lights.
* Stack the whiteboards.
* Untie markers and erasers and put them into ziplock bags.
* Keep bins in a separate pile from the large infrastructure; an LNT core lead will handle these.

=== '''Large MOMM Infrastructure''' ===

* '''Shelves:''' All the shelving breaks down flat. Look in the supplies bin for rope to tie together similarly shaped pieces of wood for easy transportation.
* '''Easy up:''' Take down the easy up. Its bag should be in the supplies bin.
* '''Val (the safe):''' Someone with a code will do a final check of Val, the valuables safe.
* All large infrastructure should be placed in one pile to be picked up by a Polaris.
* Keep bins in a separate pile from the large infrastructure; an LNT core lead will handle these.

== '''Field Sweep Crew''' ==
On the final day of the event, volunteers will gather to do a line sweep of the Bug Burn Field. This shift involves picking up pieces of MOOP (matter out of place) from the field. You will be provided with a bag for MOOP that you find and it will be collected at the end of the shift.

Be prepared for the elements, as it can be hot and sunny, or cool, rainy, and muddy. Hats and umbrellas (as well as sunscreen) are a good idea to protect against the sun.

=== '''Sunday Logistics''' ===

* '''Tents:''' As a member of late crew, you will be camping on the land an additional night, so you can leave your tent wherever it is from Sunday night through Monday morning at 8 am. We suggest that you pack up as much of your (non-essential) stuff as possible before Monday morning. You must break down your camp and stow all your belongings in a vehicle '''before''' '''8 am on Monday morning'''. (Otherwise sweepers will think your gear is MOOP.)
* '''Cars:''' No cars should be left in Lower Parking after Sunday night. Once Exodus for the event is complete on Sunday, please move your car to Upper Parking. (If you have a car cleared by GTFO, you may instead park it in a loading zone off the main path overnight and move it to Upper Parking by 8 am.)
* '''Dinner:''' LNT potluck (location TBD). Please bring leftover food and stories from the week to share! (Bring your relaxing decompression vibes and plan for an early bedtime - this is not a party night.)

=== '''Monday Logistics''' ===

* '''Morning meeting:''' We will meet at 8 am (location TBD) for breakfast and LNT land sweep overview/instructions. Note that all your belongings must be in a vehicle before the start of this meeting.
* '''Lunch:''' Lunch is provided and will likely be pizza. If you have dietary needs, please let us know in advance.
* '''Ending:''' We generally finish up around 3 pm. There is often an opportunity to help out with DPW breakdown tasks afterwards if you have energy left, but this is entirely optional.

== Rule #1: Defend against MOOP! ==

=== Definition ===

=== Guidelines ===

=== Other Tips ===

* Brightly colored zip ties, paracord, etc. are easier to find when packing up than black, white, or clear ones.
* You can reduce your total trash by removing unnecessary packaging from food and other items before you pack them.

== Rule #2: Set up camp responsibly. ==

=== If it’s dead, you can move it. If it’s alive, leave it. ===

=== DOs ===

=== DON'Ts ===

* 🚫 Don't remove any plant or animal life, dead or alive, from the forest.

== Rule #3: Bring Lost & Found items to MOMM.

== Rule #4: Don't be gross. ==

* Not in the stream
* Strain your grey water and dispose of it at least 100 feet from the stream.
* If it’s chunky or oily, pack it out! Use a funnel and container with screw top. To reduce chunkiness of grey water, wipe dishes with a paper towel into the trash before washing.
* Use ONLY biodegradable soaps

Emilywithay: /* 5. Lead a final MOOP sweep of your camp during Exodus. */

=== 2. Have a camp trash plan. ===

* If group meals or any of your events will create trash, where will that go?
* What (if anything) counts as communal trash rather than personal trash?
* Who will be responsible for taking any communal trash off-site after the event?

=== 3. Lead daily MOOP sweeps. ===

=== 4. Lost & Found items ===

Form a line where everyone is able to touch fingers with arms outstretched (closer if possible) walk in a line, at the same pace. If someone is getting ahead or falling behind, regroup. Don’t forget to look up in trees, into ferns, and under ground cover. People often forget bungee cords, tent stakes, and other items that aren’t easy to spot.

If you will not be the last person at your camp, please make sure you delegate this task to a trusted campmate. The LNT core will reach out to both you and your camp leads if we find excessive MOOP left in your area.

This makes it hard to get items back to their owners during the event, which is why we’re hoping to develop systems to funnel lost items to MOMM throughout the week.

To facilitate this, we recommend that you designate a “Camp Lost & Found” container to collect items that guests leave in your camp.

Don’t forget to look up in trees and under ground cover. People often forget bungee cords, tent stakes, and other items that aren’t easy to spot.

If you will not be the last person at your camp, please make sure you delegate this task to a trusted campmate. The LNT core will reach out to both you and your camp leads if we find excessive MOOP left in your area.

=== 1. Ensure everyone in your camp understands Firefly’s Leave No Trace guidelines. ===
Communicate this information to your camp members before the start of the event, and make sure individuals in your camp comply with those guidelines. (Please please please look around for potentially MOOPy costume items!)

=== 2. Have a camp trash plan. ===
If group meals or any of your events will create trash, where will that go?

What (if anything) counts as communal trash rather than personal trash?

Who will be responsible for taking any communal trash off-site after the event?

=== 3. Lead daily MOOP sweeps. ===

=== 4. Lost & Found items ===

== '''Lost & Found Hero''' ==

== '''Lost & Found Barker & Breakdown''' ==

=== Barker Duties ===

* Be loud. Get people into MOMM to look around just in case; it's impressive how many people don't realize they lost an item until they see it displayed on a MOMM shelf.
* Because people will ask: No, they can't take things that aren't theirs even thought it's the end of exodus. We continue to return items after the event.

=== Lost & Found Items ===

=== Small MOMM Infrastructure ===

* There will be a supplies bin in the back of MOMM where you can neatly store small items such as lights, whiteboards, etc.
* Remove batteries from anything battery operated before storing.
* Take down the lights, please please please making sure to neatly coil the fairy lights.
* Stack the whiteboards.
* Untie markers and erasers and put them into ziplock bags.
* Keep bins in a separate pile from the large infrastructure; an LNT core lead will handle these.

=== '''Large MOMM Infrastructure''' ===

== '''Field Sweep Crew''' ==

=== '''Sunday Logistics''' ===

=== '''Monday Logistics''' ===

=== '''Sunday Logistics''' ===

Once Exodus for the event is complete on Sunday, please move your car to Upper Parking if you do not have a 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle. If you do have 4-wheel or all-wheel drive, you may drive your vehicle up the road and park it near your tent (off of the main road/path but be mindful of vegetation.)
* '''Dinner:''' LNT potluck (location TBD). Please bring food to share if you have it!

=== '''Monday Logistics''' ===

== Rule #1: Defend against MOOP! ==

=== Definition ===

=== Guidelines ===

=== Other Tips ===

=== DOs ===

=== DON'Ts ===

* 🚫 Don't remove any plant or animal life, dead or alive, from the forest.

== Rule #3: Bring Lost & Found items to MOMM.

== Rule #4: Don't be gross. ==

* Not in the stream
* Strain your grey water and dispose of it at least 100 feet from the stream.
* If it’s chunky or oily, pack it out! Use a funnel and container with screw top. To reduce chunkiness of grey water, wipe dishes with a paper towel into the trash before washing.
* Use ONLY biodegradable soaps

[[Leave No Trace (LNT) Core|Return to the main LNT page.]]

== '''Lost & Found Hero''' ==

== '''Lost & Found Barker & Breakdown''' ==

=== Barker Duties ===

* Be loud. Get people into MOMM to look around just in case; it's impressive how many people don't realize they lost an item until they see it displayed on a MOMM shelf.
* Because people will ask: No, they can't take things that aren't theirs even thought it's the end of exodus. We continue to return items after the event.

=== Lost & Found Items ===

* Unless the sky/ground is too wet to make this possible, please lay out or hang any wet items to dry.
* Remove items from bins and try to make everything visible from the path. With this shift, MOMM's goal changes from "Make lost items art!" to "Make it easy for people to find their lost stuff."
* If you have time, folding clothes, rinsing gross dishes, checking for name labels, etc. is helpful but not necessary.

=== Small MOMM Infrastructure ===

* There will be a supplies bin in the back of MOMM where you can neatly store small items such as lights, whiteboards, etc.
* Remove batteries from anything battery operated before storing.
* Take down the lights, please please please making sure to neatly coil the fairy lights.
* Stack the whiteboards.
* Untie markers and erasers and put them into ziplock bags.
* Keep bins in a separate pile from the large infrastructure; an LNT core lead will handle these.

=== '''Large MOMM Infrastructure''' ===

== '''Field Sweep Crew''' ==

Meet at the top of the bug field, near where the coffee table is during the event.

This shift is 2:30-4:30 pm on Sunday (Exodus). Be sure to coordinate with your own camp to ensure you can meet your obligations both to camp breakdown and to the field sweep.

== '''Field Sweep Leader (Exodus or Land Sweep/Late Crew)''' ==
Wrangle a bunch of us into a straight-ish line and lead us across a field looking for shiny things in the grass. Weirdly meditative, also a lot like the game "Red Light Green Light," ideal for those skilled in herding cats. Prior field sweep experience is helpful but not required, and an LNT core lead will be there to help out as well. We sweep the bug field in the afternoon of exodus day, and the parking lots the following day during land sweep/late crew.

=== '''Sunday Logistics''' ===

=== '''Monday Logistics''' ===

=== 1. Ensure everyone in your camp understands Firefly’s Leave No Trace guidelines. ===
Communicate this information to your camp members before the start of the event, and make sure individuals in your camp comply with those guidelines. (Please please please look around for potentially MOOPy costume items!)

=== 2. Have a camp trash plan. ===
If group meals or any of your events will create trash, where will that go?

What (if anything) counts as communal trash rather than personal trash?

Who will be responsible for taking any communal trash off-site after the event?

=== 3. Lead daily MOOP sweeps and bring any Lost & Found items to MOMM. ===
Lead (or designate volunteers from your camp to lead) daily MOOP sweeps of any spaces in your camp where you host guests or hold events. Please complete your daily MOOP sweep before 2 pm each day.

If you identify and Lost & Found items during your MOOP sweep, please bring them down to the central Lost & Found, which will again be MOMM (The Museum of Modern MOOP), located just up the path from upper parking. As a backup, we’ll send Lost & Found Heroes around to pick up items from 2-4 pm Wed-Sat and from 9-11 am Sun.

Our long-term goal is to make our Lost & Found hero volunteer shifts unnecessary by having camps bring items to MOMM themselves.

To facilitate this, we recommend that you designate a “Camp Lost & Found” container to collect items that guests leave in your camp. You’ll also want to protect camp members’ belongings from getting swept up in the MOOP sweep; ideas for this include

* Designating specific spaces where people can safely leave their personal belongings, separate from general events areas
* Leaving at least an hour between the end of the MOOP sweep and the time when items will be taken to MOMM so camp members can check that none of their items got swept
* Providing labels and sharpies to encourage people to put their name on anything they might accidentally leave out

Emilywithay: Breakdown details added

Thank you for volunteering with the Leave No Trace (LNT) crew! We appreciate your efforts to help us keep the land free of matter out of place (MOOP). If you have any questions or suggestions before or after the event, please email LNT@fireflyartscollective.org. We'll leave contact information at MOMM if you need to get in touch with a core lead during the event. See below for descriptions of our volunteer positions.

== '''Lost & Found Hero''' ==

== '''Lost & Found Barker & Breakdown''' ==

=== Barker Duties ===

* Be loud. Get people into MOMM to look around just in case; it's impressive how many people don't realize they lost an item until they see it displayed on a MOMM shelf.
* Because people will ask: No, they can't take things that aren't theirs even thought it's the end of exodus. We continue to return items after the event.

=== Lost & Found Items ===

=== Small MOMM Infrastructure ===

* There will be a supplies bin in the back of MOMM where you can neatly store small items such as lights, whiteboards, etc.
* Remove batteries from anything battery operated before storing.
* Take down the lights, please please please making sure to neatly coil the fairy lights.
* Stack the whiteboards.
* Untie markers and erasers and put them into ziplock bags.
* Keep bins in a separate pile from the large infrastructure; an LNT core lead will handle these.

=== '''Large MOMM Infrastructure''' ===

== '''Field Sweep Crew''' ==

=== '''Sunday Logistics''' ===

* '''Tents:''' As a member of late crew, you will be camping on the land an additional night, so you can leave your tent wherever it is from Sunday night through Monday morning at 8 am. We suggest that you pack up as much of your (non-essential) stuff as possible before Monday morning. Once Exodus for the event is complete on Sunday, please move your car to Upper Parking if you do not have a 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle.

== '''Lost & Found Hero''' ==
And if you see any labeled items feel free to try to return them to their owners!

To start your shift, come to MOMM (aka the Museum of Modern MOOP, aka the event Lost & Found), which is just up the path from the upper parking portos. If there isn't an LNT lead there at the time, you'll find instructions, a volunteer shift sign-in book, and instructions for whom to contact with any questions. Your main tasks are described below.

Shifts are 2-4 pm Wednesday through Saturday and 9-11 am on Sunday (Exodus).

=== Tidy up MOMM ===
Make her look good: straighten crooked labels, pick up fallen items, rearrange items artistically, make space for new arrivals, etc.

=== Collect Lost & Found items from theme camps ===
Starting at MOMM, grab an orange pumpkin bag and walk around to camps and collect Lost & Found items.

=== Collect trash-MOOP ===
Before setting off on your rounds, please also grab a ziplock baggie to collect any trash you find along the way. There will be a secret trash receptacle behind MOMM (only for trash collected by LNT volunteers during their shifts, so please don't tell others it's here).

== '''Lost & Found Barker & Breakdown''' ==
Remind passersby to check the Lost & Found for any missing items during Exodus! Also help to organize and pack up unclaimed items and break down the Lost & Found infrastructure to get handed off to DPW for storage.

This shift is 11 am-1 pm on Sunday (Exodus).

== '''Field Sweep Crew''' ==

Meet at the top of the bug field, near where the coffee table is during the event.

This shift is 2:30-4:30 pm on Sunday (Exodus). Be sure to coordinate with your own camp to ensure you can meet your obligations both to camp breakdown and to the field sweep.

=== '''Sunday Logistics''' ===
'''Tents:''' As a member of late crew, you will be camping on the land an additional night, so you can leave your tent wherever it is from Sunday night through Monday morning at 8 am. We suggest that you pack up as much of your (non-essential) stuff as possible before Monday morning. You must break down your camp and stow all your belongings in a vehicle '''before''' '''8 am on Monday morning'''. (Otherwise sweepers will think your gear is MOOP.)

'''Cars:''' No cars should be left in Lower Parking after Sunday night. == '''Field Sweep Leader (Exodus or Late Crew)''' ==
Aka herder of cats: Wrangle a bunch of us into a straight-ish line and lead us across a field looking for shiny things in the grass. Weirdly meditative, and also a lot like the game "Red Light Green Light." Prior field sweep experience is helpful but not required, and an LNT core lead will be there to help out as well. We sweep the bug field in the afternoon of exodus day, and the parking lots the following day during land sweep/late crew.

Shift timing aligns with the regular field sweep crew and land sweep crew shifts.
